Human Variation & Race

1.        Select only ONE of the following environmental stresses: (a) heat, (b) high levels of solar radiation, (c) cold, or (d) high altitude. Discuss specifically how this environmental stress negatively impacts the survival of humans by disturbing homeostasis. -           The environmental stress of High levels of solar radiation has a negative Impact on humans by the way it disrupts and affects homeostasis. The UVA or in other words the Ultraviolet Radiation that is sent from high levels of solar radiation, in other words the sun, does this. The affects begin as the UVA penetrates the human’s epidermis and works its way into the dermis. These are also known as the outer layer of skin to the inner layer of skin. The high levels of solar radiation also affects humans through a UVB, which is the same as the UVA but only penetrates the outer layer of skin. Over a long term or period of time of exposure to UV ...

Piltdown Man!

1.  Begin by giving a brief synopsis of the Piltdown hoax, including when and where it was found, by whom, its scientific significance (what would it have taught us) and varying effects this had on the scientific community. Also include how the hoax was discovered and the varying responses it received from the scientist(s) involved and in the related fields of human evolution. - Over the span of 40 years, scientists were fooled by a hoax. In 1912, in a village named Piltdown, a man named Charles Dawson claimed to have found a human skull from early ancient man. After this discovery, geologists Arthur Smith Woodward, who was England’s best geologist and paleontologist Fr. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, went out to comb the area and proceeded to make new bone discoveries. In these findings, Dawson had discovered a jawbone, which came from the skull that he had found earlier. One of the important characteristics of this discovery was the similarity between the teeth found and human te...

Analogy/Homology

Image
A. Briefly describe two different species that possess the homologous trait. -Two species that possess the homologous trait would be an alligator and a human. An alligator is a reptile that can live both on land and in water. The alligator has four legs and tail. The human is the sophisticated species that stands on two legs and has the capability of reason. Both these species share a similar skeletal structure particularly in there forelimbs. Just as a human species, the alligator forelimbs contain the humerus, radius, ulna, and carpals. B. Describe the homologous trait of each species, focusing on the differences in structure and function of the trait. Why do these homologous traits exhibit differences between two species ? -The homologous forelimb of the human species is formed from the humerus bone which forms the upper arm, and the ulna and radius which are two bones forming the lower arm connecting to between the elbow and wrist joints. This allows rotation and bending in ...

The Scientific Method: Sleeping Student Scenario

1. It is possible that the student has developed a sleep apnea which causes the student to feel tired and fall asleep during class even though they might have had a full nights rest. 2. Test: To test the hypothesis I would conduct a multitude of tests to, first, diagnose the student's medical condition. This would require observing the sleeping patterns and breathing of the student. Finally to alter the conditions, giving the student a sleep apnea machine to wear as he sleeps should allow the student to feel energized during his class and stay awake. Results expected in order for my hypothesis to work would involve the student having irregular breathing that causes sleep apnea and also the student staying awake in class would prove the hypothesis to be true. If the student fails to fall asleep after the experiment, the hypothesis would be falsified. 3. An untestable explanation that cannot be classified as a scientific hypothesis would be if every day before class a secret a...

"If you were stranded on a desert island what two items would you take with you, and why?"

If I were stranded on a desert island and only had the option of taking two items, I would take a solar powered vehicle, and a book about being stranded on a desert island. The solar powered vehicle was one of my first thoughts because it can become very useful in being able to be spotted by rescuers as well as come in handy when needed to search for survival items on the island. If worse comes to worse the vehicle will also keep me entertained while stranded on the island. The second item on my list would be a book on how o survive and get rescued when stranded on an Island. I feel it would probably be the most useful thing to have since knowledge doesn't run out I will be prepared in any situation.
