The Scientific Method: Sleeping Student Scenario

1. It is possible that the student has developed a sleep apnea which causes the student to feel tired and fall asleep during class even though they might have had a full nights rest.
2. Test:
  • To test the hypothesis I would conduct a multitude of tests to, first, diagnose the student's medical condition. This would require observing the sleeping patterns and breathing of the student. Finally to alter the conditions, giving the student a sleep apnea machine to wear as he sleeps should allow the student to feel energized during his class and stay awake.
  • Results expected in order for my hypothesis to work would involve the student having irregular breathing that causes sleep apnea and also the student staying awake in class would prove the hypothesis to be true.
  • If the student fails to fall asleep after the experiment, the hypothesis would be falsified.
3. An untestable explanation that cannot be classified as a scientific hypothesis would be if every day before class a secret agent smokes the classroom with an undetectable gas that only effects the student.

  1. Hello Isaac!
I really enjoyed reading your post I think you did a great job. Your hypothesis was very straight forward and to the point. I also thought that your untestable explanation was very creative. I commend you for thinking outside the box!

  2. Testable Hypothesis (5/5) - Good.

Test (5/5) - Okay, but stay focused on the problem. He needs to be treated for sleep apnea to test this hypothesis.

Support (4/5) - Having sleep apnea doesn't support your hypothesis. The only result that would support your hypothesis is if he stays awake in class after being successfully treated for sleep apnea.

Falsify (4/5) - Did you really mean to say "fails to fall asleep"? Wouldn't that support your hypothesis? Did you mean "fails to stay awake"?

Untestable Hypothesis (8/10) - Okay, the gas is undetectable... but is the secret agent undetectable? Or is he real? :-) On the right track, but if any part of the cause is real, then the hypothesis is testable.

  3. Hey there Isaac - Nice job man. Glad you went with sleep apnea. I had thought of doing sleep apnea right after I posted mine; so I'm glad to see someone use it! It works out quite well in the testing sections also as it's a medical condition with real world solutions that you could use to test it.
